The Long Island Center of Photography began in 1996. Since it inception, we have been responsible for bringing to the Long Island community its first symposium on photography and related media ('98), 16 community outreach photography exhibitions, and retrospective exhibition at the Nassau County Museum of Fine Art on the work of Horst P. Horst, a distinguished photographer who resided in Oyster Bay. In addition, LICP was responsible for creating numerous networking opportunities in its attempt to increase awareness of the important role of photography within the Long Island community. We have also sought new venues for promoting the work of Long Island photographers.
Mission
The mission of the Long Island Center of Photography is to establish a unique educational and research facility on Long Island, with resources for the study of the history of photography and the archival study of specific artists (with special emphasis on Long Island artists), as well as a space for "showcasing" contemporary work.
Our Governing Aims
In all its specific programs and activities, LICP undertakes to support these founding objectives:
- To promote diversity and creativity in the fields of photography and the related media, and to bring knowledge and enjoyment of these activities to as broad and varied an audience as possible.
- To offer community-wide access to photographic, computer, electronic, and multimedia equipment and training, with special attention to disadvantaged segments of the community that might otherwise have limited or no access to such equipment or training.
- To enrich cultural life on Long Island via public art; and to provide new recreational outlets and cultural opportunities for all parts of Long Island's diverse multi-cultural community.
- To gather an archival collection of the visual history of Long Island.
